<mod>Split from 'Philosophical quotes to live by'</mod>

Mater tua criceta fuit, et pater tuus redoluit bacas sambuci

It means, "Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries". Yes, that is philosophical, as how can your mother be a hamster? It brings up all sorts of questions.

It would be "pater tuus redoluit bacas sambuci". Sorry for the off-topic nitpicking.

Isn't 'pater' father, not mother?

I just thought that when you said 'pater tuus redoluit bacas sambuci' that you were referring to 'father' instead of mother, but this is going way off topic so I'll just stop typing now

They'll probably split this topic, but:

Mater = mother
tua = your
criceta = hamster
fuit =was
et = and
pater = father
tuus = your
redoluit = stank
bacas = of berries
sambuci = of sambucus

Honestly, my Latin is so rusty, that I couldn't possibly form a grammatically correct sentence.

Once upon a time I was good at Latin...

Too Good To Be True, I'm impressed with your knowledge of Latin and everyone else for that matter.

Huey: Who made that statement? I don't see how that can actually be a philosophical quote.

It is philosophical.

If by "philosophical" you mean a nonsensical taunt from the Frenchman in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The only Latin words I know are the same ones used in English, like auditorium, gymnasium, or Tyrannosaurus-Rex ^^

There are optinal Latin classes in my school, but I don't like the priest who gives them. tounge2 Hmm, maestro, the Latin syntax is Subject–Object–Verb–Complement? How weird...

"Your mother hamster was." ^^

Petter: it's compulsory in my school. Its only practical use is making you understand what you are actually saying if you speak a latin language.

Bruno: even if usually the verb is the last word, construction in Latin means NOTHING. Repeat: n-o-t-h-i-n-g. You can write words on pieces of paper, put them in a hat, randomly pick them, and still make sense. Especially in poetry for reasons of syllables and other stuff. Cases matter. That's how you discern which is the subject, the object, and other stuff. Really aspect in that can make you work imagination your.
And there are no articles.
