This was sent to me by the researcher herself. If you'd like to participate, read through this, and then sign up at http://www.luciddreaming.de

Practice in lucid dreams

tossing coins, number of hits and other problems
If you are practicing something in your lucid dreams, will you do better in your waking life? If you are practicing a motor skill in your lucid dreams, will this practice improve your performance when you are awake? Or are lucid dreams not helpful to affect waking performance of certain skills? In this issue of “online-experiments in lucid dreaming” we will try to find an answer to these questions.

Prof. Paul Tholey (1981) pioneered in examining lucid dreams and their relationship to sports. In early studies on motor learning in lucid dreams, he was able to show that lucid dreamers are able to perform different sports activities in their lucid dreams. The participants successfully carried out complex movements that they had already done in the waking state, like skiing or gymnastics. They experienced these movements as harmonious, easy going, and accompanied by pleasant feelings. Moreover, all lucid dreamers experienced practice effects on their movements while lucid dreaming and they had positive effects concerning their sport skills when awake.

Yet we know from several studies, surveys and our own experience that focusing on a particular task in lucid dreams is not always that easy. In a recent study (Erlacher, Schredl, & Grasbon, in prep), an experienced lucid dreamer was asked to practice mirror-tracing, which is a psychological task to measure motor learning, in his lucid dreams. In three REM stages he was able to lucid dream a total of 15 minutes, but almost 90% of the time he was busy with finding or producing the objects he needed to do the mirror-tracing task (e.g. mirror, cover, paper). Moreover, he was interrupted by other disturbing conditions.

To find out more about the possibilities and the problems of learning specific tasks, we ask participants in this issue of “online-experiments in lucid dreaming” to perform a very simple task: Try to toss a coin into a coffee cup! So the task is to practice your aiming skills in your lucid dreams. Participants are asked to document the number of successful hits and also the problems they had with the task.

online-experiment

Hi everyone,

I just want to write some more words about the online-experiment:
I am a phd-student at the University of Heidelberg (Germany) and I'm writing my thesis about the possibility to practice motor skills in lucid dreams. I designed a lucid dream experiment to do at home. I already conducted the experiment in Germany with great success, and I'd like to replicate the findings! Because of that I translated the experiment. The task to do in your lucid dreams is very simple: Try to toss a coin into a coffee cup!

You can find everything you need on the website:
http://luciddreaming.de

It is important that you consider the following points:

1. You should read the introduction/instructions on the webpage
2. download and print the documents for the experiment (4 pages including instructions and protocol sheets)
3. Do the experiment at a night when you feel confident to have a lucid dream:
3.1. In the evening: do the coin-tossing in the waking-state and write down your hits out of 20 tosses.
3.2. In your lucid dreams: pracitce, practice, practice!
3.3. In the morning: do the coin-tossing in the waking state and and write down your hits out of 20 tosses.
4. Submit your results by using the formular on luciddreaming.de --> Step 4 (Important: You don’t have to sent anything by mail!!)

IMPORTANT: If you have irregularly lucid dreams or you are a non-lucid dreamer than PLEASE participate too in the experiment! It might be the case that the task is stimulating you to have lucid dreams; also you might have a normal dream about the coin-tossing task; you remember no dream during the night. Either case, the data would be equally important for use!

I would be very happy if many lucid dreamers participate in the coin tossing task!

best wishes from Heidelberg, Germany!

Daniel Erlacher

is there an ending date to the experiment? in other words, how long do we have to send in our dreams?

edit: ah it's on the site:

Quote:
The online-experiment ends in August 1, 2005. Please make sure to submit your results before this date.

I found this topic few days ago. I haven't started this experiment yet, because at first i wanted to check out how easy it is to find a cup and coins in LD. 2 LD's today morning convinced me that it's relatively easy, so i'm trying to start this experiment very soon. I'll post the description of my preparations to show possible problems with that in LD.

Taken from my DJ:
__________________________________
5th July, #80

Lucidity: high
Lucidity trigger: DILD
Dream control: Average
Preparations: MILD

Location: In my childhood town
Period of the year in the dream: Summer
Time: Late evening
Weather: Dry
Emotions/feelings: Preparing for the experiment
People: No visible DC-s

Scenario: I ride with a bike to my childhood home using longer way. While riding i become aware of dreaming. So i'm about to do what is planned earlier (IRL): to find a cup and a coin to see how easy it would be to carry out the experiment. So i choose first house i see, leave the bike at the gate, and enter to the house. It's dark inside, but instead of switching the light, i try to call it out. But it does not succeed. Still i'm able to see, and i end up in garret/attic.

I find a cup and some bottle-corks. Those would fit also, but very soon i notice a chocolate-coin what i eat immedeately, and a small coin that fits perfectly.

Now i'm trying to place the cup to some suitable place, because the floor of garret has many slots. I find a pretty suitable place soon, but at the same time a male voice interrupts to my dream. It's like someone has visiting my (dead) granny, and saying: "Hello. I'm searching for..." After a while this voice wakes me up IRL. This voice most probably was the co-effect of SP what we sometimes experience while falling asleep, or waking up

5th July, #81

Lucidity: high
Lucidity trigger: DILD
Dream control: High
Preparations: MILD

Location: In my childhood home
Period of the year in the dream: Summer, or Autumn
Time: Probably evening, or day
Weather: Turning to rain
Emotions/feelings: Preparing for the experiment
People: None

Scenario: I wash myself in sauna. I notice a black cat with white dot at the near building (IRL it would be impossible), and a dog. As i look at them i somehow realize that it can be a dream. Soapy, i go out and take a short walk in garden. The sky is filled with grey clouds what predict rain. I feel the wind blowing (probably related to air conditioner in my bedroom). I walk inside the house to prepare for experiment.

I find a cup from the kitchen. In living room i find a small coin among others that fits perfectly for the experiment. I try to fit a cup to suitable distance. Then i check for more similar coins and find 2 more. Once again i fit the cup into suitable distance (it's bit hard to measure the exact distance in a dream). I need to push the table. Then i'm ready to toss a coin and i start to prepare for the shot. But my dream ends and i wake up IRL.

Conclusion: finding a cup and a coin is easy in LD. What should be improved is dream stability to make the dream last long enough to carry the experiment.
___________________________________________

Problems: the cups i found in LDs were different. If i can increase my dream control, it would not be a problem to create the exact cup what i used before going to sleep. Otherwise it would look like: using one cup in evening, using different cup in LD and finding the exact cup what i used in LD next morning.

But again: it's only matter of dream control, because finding the coins with exact size were relatively easy.

Current LD goal(s): Making LD my hobby
