Yes indeed, I've been on a plane before. And indeed, once in a LD when I flew over clouds, it looked like viewed from a plane. I also think the "treetop limit" is due to a perceptual habit cause we generally don't see things from a point of view situated above the objects where we can stand on (hmmm... sounds like I didn't expressed it very clearly. hope you understand).

I think I understand...
Perhaps you could try different flying methods, different ones might take you higher.

If it is due to the view, it should help to look up. The sky is not so complex so it is probably easier to make up on the fly. No pun intended.

I don't really seem to have a limit. I wonder if it has something to do with your flying style? I can fly with both arms forward, but when I try to go "Neo style" (Both arms back) I just start falling. I have no idea why this happens...

Hmmm yes i must admit i used to have the same problem many years ago, and every now and then.
But.... mine was about a meter off the ground max two.
When i first started, it took incredible amount of effort to fly, i dont know why, my lucidity was well adjusted and I could do anything else you ask,.... but fly.
The trick i learnt after trying out many other peoples suggestions which mind you did help, was to visualise flying while awake as clearly as i could. this would in turn make it much eaiser to dream and fly high fast etc etc
give it a go and see where it takes you

For the moment, it will be difficult to me cause I do no more practise LD'ing and I've just spontaneous LD's from time to time. I just remembered this problem and wanted to exchange points of views with other LD'ers to see if they noticed this, if they investigated it, and if they had found an explanation.
If you say that visualization can help, I think it means the problem is related with the usual way of seeing things: it must be sort of engrammed in our brains thus it's hard to change it. Flying at "about a meter off the ground max two" globally corresponds to our standing position point of view.

I think KNOWING helped me the most.
When I first started Lucid Dreaming, I flew in the air in that "swimming" sort of way.. and sometimes I would just drift back to the ground.
After a while, though, I had many normal dreams where I flew Superman style... When I woke up from those dreams, I knew that I could fly that way in a LD. A few dreams later, I had a LD and flew with great ease.
Confidence and knowingness are ALWAYS helpful.

I remembered this topic in my LD today, so I decided to try and fly as high as possible, I had no trouble controlling my flight but one funny thing happened I didn't see any trees or rooftops just the blue sky, I flew higher until I woke up so I never had time to reach a limit.
Current LD goal(s): Play chess on the moon :), transform into a guinea pig

that happened to me ALOT! I remember that I was even lower than you, that I was like 4 feet off the ground, but I was parallel to the ground. When I angled upwards to hopefully go in that direction, my feet scraped the ground so I feel ya man!

Ive never experianced this "altitude problem", although ive only realy had one LD in wich i was able to fly effectivley, wich you can read about in my dream journal called MY LD DREAM JOURNAL. And I realy dont think you need to know what it looks like to be high up. I think you just need a good imagination thats my thought on the subject. Oh and you know how i said that ive only had one LD where ive been able to fly effectivley? Well i think the problem was that i wasnt trying it right. The time my flying worked (once again, in my dream journal) I just thought about lifting off the ground and i flew into the air.And from there it was pretty much just a matter of steering. And the steering was extreemly easy. To deminstrate, say you were flying forward in a streight line. If you want to steer right you leen right, left you lean left, up you bend back, down you dive down. I hope that this helped you at least a little bit
Current LD goal(s): Kill a giant snail monster with an arrow covered in salt

In my last LD, I tried flying, but the second I got off the ground, I lost it. Other than the losing the dream part, there was no real altitude gaining problem, it seemed fine. Just run on the ground, will yourself up, and just go with it and start walking in the air... Kinda. That worked for me just fine.
