Hope this helps,

~WHat is an avatar...
<---- See the picture to the left.
Thats an avatar!
...how do I go about choosing my own or creating one??
To get one of the forum avatars...- Click on your [ PROFILE ] tab at the top of this page.
- Scroll down the profile page until you get to the section headed [ AVATAR CONTROL PANEL ].
- Click on the [ SHOW GALLERY ] button, it sends you to the default avatar gallery.
- To choose one of these, click on the button below the picture you like and then click [ SELECT AVATAR ] on the button at the bottom of the page.
The avatar you chose will now be displayed under your name on every post you make. To get an avatar from a website such as...
THe aVaTaR LaB (my av site)
Ashvura's Gallery for LD4All.com
DaYDReaM GRaPHiCS
56X56 aVaTaRS
aVaTaR PoRTaL
HoT aVaTaRS
- Choose an avatar you like from any avatar site on the internet.
Do a SeaRCH for avatars to find millions more to choose from.
note: choose an image no larger than 65 x 65 pixels and 6kb filesize.
- Save it to your computer, in My Documents for example.
- Go to a free hosting site such as RiPWaY and register to become a member if required.
- Upload your selected avatar onto their site and copy the link location of the hosted avatar.
then...
- Click on your [ PROFILE ] tab at the top of this page.
- Scroll down the profile page until you get to the section headed [ AVATAR CONTROL PANEL ].
- Where it says "Link to off-site Avatar:
Enter the URL of the location containing the Avatar image you wish to link to".
Copy and paste (or type in) the hosted avatar link address into the box and then click the [ SUBMIT ] button below the section. To make your own avatar...
You need to find a suitable picture on the internet or from some other source. To get the avatar the correct size (pixel size and file size) you need to edit the picture in a graphics program of some kind. I use Paintshop Pro 5.04. Alternatively, use GIFWorks - Free online image e-tools. This site is easy to use...all need is your mouse! Don't forget...the image should be no bigger than 80 x 80 pixels and 6kb or less in file size. Upload the image to an avatar host (see my last post for information on avatar hosts). Link to the image in your profile page.
If all's well your avatar should show up next to your posts.

I've got a great avator in my gallery at Hot avators I had to wait impatiently for it to be approved. Then when I tried to do it, I even had my son following the directions above . It wouldn't paste in. What are we doing wrong?
Should I try again on one of the other sites that were mentioned above?
I feel like I'll be avatorless forever.
Current LD goal(s): visit hippo in the labyrinth * ask DCs questions * shared dreaming with friends

Why does the space of the image matter if it is not hosted on your server?
My avatar is linked to my personal server, so there is no extra bandwith for you. The size is only like ~20kb, that can't be too much?
Just wondering why.
I find those rules pretty strange. Almost everyone these days have broadband and even if they don't, 20kb is not much to load as that is the only reason I can think off, why you would have a size-limit?
Just wondering.
Good night.

if everyone would have a 20kb avatar and you are reading a topic in which 20 different ppl have posted that would be 400kb to download.
and there are still ppl on dial-up here as well...

Good night. |
I notice you are from Sweden, and I've heard they have 40Mbps internet connections available there. I bet it's hard for you to believe that very many internet users still use a sad 28kbps connection.
40,000,000 bits a second doesn't compare to 28,000 bits a second.
No form of broadband is available to the majority of the US, and my only option for broadband was by satellite which can be expensive.
Some people don't even have satellite as an option and will only have dialup available until new technology is developed.
I envy the swiss.

Why not up the resolution a bit? like for example 120x120 6KB max, as this would make no difference in loading times for dialup users... |
The filesize restriction is there the decrease load times, and the dimension restrictions are there so the forum doesn’t bend out of shape. If someone had an avatar what was really long, but still only 6k, it would cause the left-hand column to grow across the screen, and shrink the right-hand column, which has the actual post in it. It just wouldn’t look very nice at all, and may even require continual horizontal scrolling back and forth to read a post.
I guess this wouldn’t be too much of a problem if it was increased to 80 or 90, though. It’s just that some people are still viewing the forum in resolutions of 800x600, and even 640x480.
Maybe someone could trial a slightly larger avatar (with Q’s permission and close observation) to see if the forum is still viewable for most people? Perhaps a poll could be set up so people can report how this trail avatar looks on their display?

I just want to point out that villagephotos isn't free if you want to use it to host your avatar:

Images Not Working?
Free accounts cannot link directly to images in your account (hotlinking). Instead, share your images by placing links to your albums on other sites. We provide the URL to your albums at the top of each album page. |

2,500 megs bandwidth p/month (~70,000 hits)

Got my avatar hosted there now. Took about 2 minutes to register, confirm, upload, and link.
