Theres this neat website that I often visit. Its has bible codes and it also has this Mayan Doomsday countdown to 2012. It says we have 5 Years 87 days ... etc
Heres the website for it.

Shore lines? If glaciers melt, the water level will rise drastically, where's all that water supposed to go?

Global warming is pretty much a natural phenomenon, sure we're helping it along a bit this time but people seem to forget, we've already survived one Ice age, and back then we didn't even have central heating
Sensationalist media (which is all media these days) is just trying to scare the sh!t out of us. Think about all the stuff over the last few years, we're all going to die of sars, never happened, we're all going to die of Avian Flu, well that one got swept under the rug pretty quickly too? and global warming, jeesh, the temperature has been rising steadily for how long exactly? Perhaps we should remember that after 1998 temperatures dropped sharply and only in 2005 did they get back to that high, i believe that 2006 was colder than 2005 too. So does that mean that global warming has reversed, and that we are all in fact going to plunge into freezing temperatures within 20 years time? No, it means that the temperature of the Earth is, and always has been, a variable.
Of course the big freeze is what scientists were warning us about in the seventies, after temperatures peaked in the early 40's and then dropped off sharply before rising again in the early 60's and then dropping off sharply again, before rising again... oh wait, I see a pattern emerging here.
Anyway, I live on a hill. bring on the flood!
I will say it's somewhat irritating that the Gulf stream has decided to shift and thus bring tornado alley to my humble area of England, but we built our houses out of bricks, they can take a bit of wind
Sorry about this off topic rant, just a couple more points, Global Warming statistics (there's a word that means you can definitely trust it, did you know 78% of statistics are made up?) have roughly a 400% margin of error. I mean seriously, If a builder came to do a job and said to you, well it's going to take two weeks, but it might take eight weeks, you'd tell him to get lost right?
And now I would like to direct you to a chart that shows the true causes of global warming. Now this is how you use statistics properly:

I'll shut up now.

I've been researching this since when i first heard about it back in 1998 and i've come to the conclusion that something big will happen.
Here are the facts, that can be scientifically verified:
1.) sun having solar maximum
2.) solar system moving into central equator of our [new] galactic disk, sun in perfect alignment with central sun of galaxy. As our solar system moves further into the central equator more centripetal and centrifual force is exerted on it, which could cause pole flips (we are well overdue)
3.) precession of the equinoxes, earths north pole will be pointing towards the star Polaris within the region of Aquarius, bringing us out of the age of Pisces and into the age of Aquarius.
4.) venus transit - venus passing between the sun and earth creating a sort of eclipse (not visible of course but this transit only happens once every 7 years... just so happens 2012 is one of those years)
5.) many planetary alignments, the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn, Neptune and Pluto will all be aligned in the sky on 21st. Dec. 2012. I actually used a program called Stellarium to verify this, and have a screenshot of it.
6.) our solar system is part of a dead galaxy known as the sagitarius dwarf galaxy that is merging with the milkyway, which is why the milkyway appears on an angle in the sky at night. Also explains global warming and why other planets like mars and pluto have been getting warmer.
7.) earths magnetic field is decreasing due to the decreasing spin of the earth and greater wobble effect.
now all that information alone is enough to make me thing "ok something big will happen" wouldn't you agree? lets have a look.. sun having solar maximum while the earth has a weakened magnetic field with extra force being exerted on us due to our position in the [new, and more energetic] galactic disk.. is not good. The facts speak for themselves, but what sort of electromagnetic effect could this new more energetic galaxy that we are moving into have on us as conscious bio-electro-magnetic lifeforms? this is where the belief comes in that we move into a higher density where we attain enlightenment and spiritual abilities. Here is an interesting and very thought-provoking video explaining all of this, amongst other things like how life can be found anywhere in the universe provided the right conditions.

Solar Maximum: We were at solar maximum in 2001 and the world didn't end then, we were at solar maximum 11 years before that too, and 11 years before that, and yes, 11 years before that as well. At none of these points did a major cataclysmic event occur.
Solar system and the galactic disc: Whilst it seems logical that this might cause some trouble, increased likelyhood of collisions for a start, as well as the theorised "dusting" of the planet as we pass through the vast hydrogen clouds in the galaxy's spiral arms, it should be pointed out that most of Earth's biggest extinctions occurred when the solar system was at its most northerly point in its cycle, which stretches about 230 light years above the galactic plane.
As with the age of aquarius stuff, meh, I'm not much of a believer, but the age of aquarius doesn't start for another 600 odd years. (if we're going by actual constellations and not by the 30 degree Zodiac standard, although even then the earliest it's been suggested it may begin is a good 50 years after 2012)
Venus transit: This happened in 2004 too, nothing big happened, also, it happens in pairs in a 243 year cycle, not every seven years, therefore after 2012 it won't happen again untill the pairing in 2117 and 2125. Also, it will be visible, but it is suggested that you don't look directly at the sun, I hear it's bad. If you wanted to watch it you could use a pin hole camera, it'll be on June 5th and 6th 2012, could be pretty cool, although it will just look like a dot travelling round the sun, nothing as exciting as a proper solar eclipse.
Planetary alignment: is the date for this rather marvelous alignment not 24 of december 2011? A full year before the supposed event. Speaking of planetary alignments you should check out this photo, it's literally awesome: http://www.astropix.com/HTML/H_OTHER/PLANETS.HTM
SagDEG: Of the Sagittarius dwarf elliptical galaxy not much is currently known, it is possible, as many scientists believe, that it has been orbiting the Milky way for billions of years, some believe it to have completed as many as 10 orbits. Whatever the truth may be, the fact that we only discovered it in 1994 does not mean that it is a new influence on our little solar system
Magnetic field weakening: This is just not true, this is the bizzarre creationist argument that "proves" that life on Earth cannot be older than 10,000 years because the rate of decay suggests that beyond 10,000 years ago the magnetic field would have been so strong that life would not have been possible. It should be pointed out that this argument is not based on fact. Whilst the dipole has been decreasing over the last 150 years, this decrease has been completely balanced by the increase in the nondipole. the fact is that the total observed strength of the field has remained almost constant, with only the slight fluctations that any such field will encounter.
I thank you.

In my opinion what will happen on that date will be shocking:
Thousands of those who believe the apocalypse IS coming will wake up to the same ol' reality of routine- dissapointed.
I see no reason to start living by the Mayan calender (whatever they meant) and expecting something. They had built some great looking pyramids, left nice artwork- but so did the Egyptians, and I see no reason to worship Ra or Seth etc.

| The close passing of Earth by a massive Comet Planet (almost as large as Jupiter) would place a powerful gravitational pull upon earth and could cause POLAR SHIFT. The earth could flip on its axis and cause 1000 ft high tidal waves, 300 m.p.h. winds and trigger every earthquake and volcano on earth to erupt. |
I love the snow! if that happens, I hope I'm frozen so I cannot feel anything.
But nothing is going to happen, to many people worry themselves.

ok...
ill just say that most people will be disappointed. not because nothing happened, but because what DID happen is so far off from what they predicted would happen, the sun might as well be the event and Eris the prediction
it might some sort of conscious shift... maybe.
But something WILL happen, and probably something big, and most likely in no way bad *(directly)*

what were you thinking? I doubt devoted christians would have any interest in the year 2012... since in the bible it says we won't know the time or the date when the Son of God will return.
For myself I doubt anything will happen in 2012 except a lot of disappointed people

I do not know if 2012 will be the year, but the effects of Peak Oil will become clear in the near future. For all of you who do not know, Peak Oil suggests oil production will peak when around half of the world's oil supply is extracted, and will then slowly decline until it runs out. The theory has been proven in the field, since many individual fields have already peaked and are in decline.
Most oil company's say it will take 20 years or so for worldwide production to peak, but a lot of experts say Peak Oil will happen in the near future, or has already happened. Oil production has been stuck at around 73 million barrels a day since 2004 and has been in decline since 2008. This data is easily verifiable for anyone interested. Maybe it's just the financial cirsis, but at this point I am very pessimistic. As a society, we are not ready for Peak Oil.
So yes, I do think something will happen in 2012 or sometime soon thereafter.

I agree with Solaris, if nothing particular was gonna happen in 2012, we'll sure think of something by ourselves. Oil shortage, financial crisis, pollution of pretty every imaginable natural resource, desertification and consequent lack of farmable land, tension between nations armed with nuclear warheads...
Personally, I'll be surprised if nothing happens by 2013.

Nothing will happen on that day that wasn't already happening. It'll be like any other day. The Mayan's predicted something would happen that day, but you know what they didn't predict? The end of their civilization.

I also heared the mays just misscalculated it, and that the world will still last until uhhhm well a lot longer then 2012.. But if it end, that kind of sucks, because I will have been spending my entire life at school, while that's kinda useless if you've no future
