Banned books in our schools...

Knowledge is dangerous. Burn the books!

But seriously, this kind of thing happens all the time, especially in the U.S. It’s essentially about control over what kids know and making sure they don’t get any revolutionary ideas like maybe everyone should be equal, etc. It’s very appalling, actually.

I detest this. If I was at a school that did this I would make a point to read most of them, and discuss them often. I love LOTR especially and Harry Potter is good too.

omg, that would suck! No offence to anyone here, but I honestly can’t understand americans are still so paranoid about comunism… I don’t understand banning any books at all in what is called a “democracy”.

Not that I really understand any of them, but the Lord of the Rings remains a total mystery…

And again, where is this?

Exactly! One step away from Fahrenheit 451

Why are you so shocked? You’re basically living in a police state. Nazi Germany did the same thing, as did every other totalitarian state in history.

Ironically, even with the internet, this generation is going to be the dumbest yet.

I think i should read Mein Kampf and finish The Prince and the communist manifesto just to annoy all of the government censorships. You do know that they keep records in librarys of who gets certain books (like Mein Kampf for example) and monitor internet searches ( I wouldnt be suprised if the FBI or homeland security has tabs on my internet, beacause i look up things like how to make exploses and I own Mein Kampf, The communist manifesto, The Prince, Mao’s little red book, books on marxism, and many others.)

I’m curious Kava, what is that list based on? Because where I went to school, there were no banned book. It also wasn’t that long ago

In fact I remember being required to read To Kill A Mockingbird (and then using it in a research paper >.<), Anne Frank, Huck Finn, James & The Giant Peach, Of Mice and Men, and many others. My class didn’t, but my friend’s class also had to read Animal Farm.
There were also no problems with reading Harry Potter or LOTR.

I’m fairly certain none of the schools around here have any banned books.

I’ve heard of some of these books being on the banned list from a petition in our local library to keep these books from being banned.

Most of the banning is being done in Catholic and/or Christian schools and Harry Potter is the big offender because of the witchcraft. Here’s an article written 3 years ago but if you google the topic you’ll be able to find more.

Banning books isn’t new, it’s been happening for a long time now. It’s new books that are being added to the list.

I know most of my points have already been stated in some form (banning is bad, OMG I can’t believe what’s on the list, etc.), but I feel compelled to write simply because this is such a huge moral issue.

All books are banned because of some form of ignorance. Maybe the person arguing for the book’s banning has never read it. Maybe those who would ban Harry Potter can’t step out of the 17th century. It could be that parents don’t want their kids to be exposed to the sort of violence that they’re going to hear about anyway. Whatever the reason, there is an element of ignorance involved.
Maybe reading a bit more can fix that.

Well said. I agree with you 100%. It makes me sad that people don’t want to read or think books are bad.

My school doesn’t ban books; in fact, it encourages reading things like Animal Farm. It was required reading for sophmores in some High Level classes.

OMG that book is on the list too.

Woah, What the? My school actually makes us read “Of mice and men” and “To kill a mockingbird” for english 2.

Kinda weird, I don’t see much wrong with the novels.

Ill try to find the list, I cant remmber what I saw it in I think it was USA Weekend, or something. The catagories of why these books are being banned are…
socialy offensive
too much sex
irreligious
too polotical

Heres a list… cadl.org/books-movies/bookli … books.html
Ha, how ironic is it that Farrenhite 451 is banned. Who the hell decides this crap? This one is so hillarious… cadl.org/books-movies/recrev … aurice-sen dak

That is absolutely disgusting. They banned “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss because it “criminalizes the forest industry.” No wonder most Americans just accept the BS that the US government pitches them. It’s my opinion that banning books like this is designed to make sure kids don’t ask questions and just become obedient members of society.

Little house on the Prarie was banned? That’s just cruel.

This is disgusting. I pity those who banned the books and sincerely hope that the children in these schools will be smart enough to go out on their own and see what they are missing.

I’m sorry hun, but Anne Frank did not survive the holocaust.

Reading should be encouraged more. This whole topic motivates me to volunteer at the library to teach kids to read! :read:

They banned The Diary of Anne Frank because it contains some sex, I believe.

I haven’t read it, personally.

the version of anne frank i read didnt have any sex in it, at the most it only had kissing.
but of course there’s been about 5 re-drafts of it in different areas of america, so idk.
as for mein kampf, i can understand from their view and where america is going nowadays, considering the fact that it was written by the same man who used the jews as scapegoats of hate and put them along with blacks, homosexuals, and anyone who was even called a jew inside a camp where they put you in giant room with a bunch of naked people just so they could kill you with cyanide and then burn you :meh:.
as for things like the lord of the rings and harry potter, i dont see much point in it other then the fact that there are some children with highly unstable minds (which is becoming more rampant for some reason) which this can only contribute to in some insane way.(i didnt read the whole article on it, it was about children with unstable minds vs. books of complete fantasy.)
but then they should just ban the catcher and the rye.(if it isnt already)
animal farm, while i was reading it i saw some direct interpretations of marxisism and communism, such as the flag of the bulls horn and the hoof in the same shape as the hammer and the sickle, and the changing of COMMANDMENTS into simple laws or sayings that are contradictions of eachother.
as for the lorax, they dont want to be teaching children that its bad to cut down trees, because the wood industry is raking in so much cash that they dont want it opposed, and Dr. seuss directly affliates its books with any and all children under the age of 7-8.
also, those 3 catagories arent even the beggining.
the U.S. government is a power that continues to grow, it controls its population with mainstream information, and even ideals.
its gotton so bad that people dont know common information that they should know from common sense.
literally, it has gotton so horrible that nobody these days would even survive something simple, like being “stranded” after a hurricane.
the water is only 3-4 feet deep, and they wont have any water moccasins unless theres a freshwater creek nearby, even then most snakes would choose land because freshwater snakes cant survive in saltwater, sure your stuffs got water damage, but they choose to sit on their lazy asses while getting dehydrated, and sunburnt while they slowly starve to death all because their “waiting for help”.
and trust me, i live 3 miles to the gulf of mexico, Ike hit my house like a freight train, and i walked those extra miles to the next city while at least 10 people that i could count were sitting on their roofs just looking at the water.
but back onto the topic, every government wants you to know as little as possible, and when it comes to things like history, they dont want it to happen again, but this is only the tip of the iceberg.
they dont want free thinkers, those who know where to find information on how corrupt our government is, what they’ve been hiding behind those white walls for years upon years.
element 115
the tsar bomb (resently released)
secret government testing on unwilling subjects
new chemically altered drugs
bio-chemical warfare
the first beta testic of self-replicating nanobots
whats behind the walls of area 51 (3 people have tried getting in, the farthest so far was 2.8/5 miles in, he caught footage of a never-before seen antenna structure, presumably 5 ft. tall, looked like an upside down hersheys kiss with a long base on it with a black visor, right after that military came out of nowhere with shotguns and escorted him out after he hid the camera.)
its those with either the knowledge to want to know whats going on, or those with common sense to actually realize whats happening that the government dont want here.
im not saying its a conspiracy, but it is happening, just ask any person you know what they know about all of this, and i’ll bet you 50 bucks that they dont.

That’s possibly the most retarded thing I’ve ever read in my entire life. To kill a mockingbird encourages empathy and morals, anti-racism, so on and so forth, if anything this book should be encouraged to be read. Like in my school, we had to read that book, and grade 11 english class read animal farm (Which is only socially offensive i you’re retarded.) But really, the whole sex thing? wtf. I go to a catholic school, and I read a book filled with sex, and others with racial slurs, and obviously, there have been no problems. I honestly can’t even believe people are BANNING books in schools… It’s very sad indeed.

And learning about the holocaust is wrong?

I really dont understnad the “Too political” catagorie. That makes absolutley no sence. There banning “Animal farm” why?, because its politcal on a rebelous level? There treating it as if Hittler wrote it. Polotics is something that needs to be learned. I mean it just makes no sence period. It is really getting scary. They might as well flush freespeach down the drain, because by banning these books that is what they are teaching the upcoming generation. There being trained to live in the upcoming police state, and beleive me it is coming fast, and hard. The America we read about in History books(which is probley filtred, and untrue) is no more so just get use to. We have too many … Ill shut up, because I will offend someone. Im just so pissed right now. I just hope people are paying attention to what is going on. They say knowledge is power. Hell knowledge is now a privlage. Kids will learn only what will be allowed to learn, and people wonder why kids hate schools, and dont respect the ecucation system. Its a sad, sad joke now. Im just so glad I dont have kids, because I would be so tempted to home school them which wouldnt be fair to them, because they would be deprived of social skills which is just as importent as anything else taught in school. Its just not fair, and feels me with so much frustration, but what the fuck can you do just except it, and move on. Protest… What??? Damnit now Im pissed!!!
