...and:

- The kid who is given command of an entire battalion
- The sexually ambiguous general with a female-ninja-looking mech
- The psychopath (who works for the army of course) with the HUGE mass-destruction mech
- The dark guy with some gothic-looking mech
- The big, strong and stupid guy with a fist-fighting mech
- The knight with a sword-fighting mech (even if ultrapositronspacetimedisplacementbeamcannons are available)
- The protagonist's love interest who will get wounded even when her mech gets shot in its pinky finger
- The gun lover, with his gun-loving mech (with infinite ammo if said guy is on the evil side, but with ammo that will run out when most needed if he's on the good side)

> Full Metal Alchemist
> Naruto (currently still watching)
> Ninja scroll
> X
> Spriggan
> Fist of the north star (movie)
> Street fighter II

er... I think thats it really.... any suggestions... i'm really getting into anime now :D!

Oh, I like anime. Basicially my whole Japanese class at uni is totally obsessed with it, lol. I can't say I've seen nearly as much of it as they have (when I say they're obsessed, I mean OBSESSED), but I still like it.

Ones I've seen:
- Almost anything by Hayao Miyazaki, who is a total genius (except Howl's Moving Castle, which I'm dying to see because the original book was written by my favourite author, Diana Wynne Jones)
- Perfect Blue
- NGE (but I didn't really like this, I couldn't understand it)
- Sailor Moon (when I was little and they still showed it on TV)
- Pokemon (only a few episodes)

... I guess I prefer the movies to the TV series, really.

My suggestions to Freedom (since you asked!):
- Everything by Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki, they're fantastic!
- Inuyasha. I haven't seen the anime version of this, but the manga is brilliant. Pretty violent, though.

I'm spamming my NOW WATCHING LIST (yeah u read that right, this is not all that I have seen, but what I'm currently watching)

Tsubasa Chronicle
The Law of Ueki
Speed Grapher (Nudity and graphical violence, be warned)
Monster
Mahou sensei negima shutup (don't watch it, really don't)
Zipang
Eyeshield 21
Honey & Clover (GREAT)
Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan (Also Great but in a different way then H&C)
Shuffle!
Kamichu!
Gun x Sword
Zettai Shonen
Okusama wa Joshikosei
Kidou Shinsengumi Moeyo Ken TV
Suzuka (If u like romance, watch this grin
Eien no Aseria - Aseria the Eternal
Tide-Line Blue
Amaede Naideyo/Amaede Yo/ Amaenaideyo (w/e XD)
Koi Koi Seven
Akahori Gedou Hour Rabuge

It used to be 25 anime at once, but I dont have that much time now turn3.

Recommendations:

Air TV - 13 episodes (2005)
Samurai Champloo - 26 episodes (2004)
Monster - 70+ episodes (2004 - still running)
Akira - 1 movie (1988)
Honey and Clover - ??? (2005 - still running)
Shinsheiki Evangelion - 26 episodes (1995)

Notes on Air TV: It has GREAT (really, AMAZING) animation, it's based on a hentai game... (apparently h-games in Japan have plot XD) its not ecchi, nor hentai, go see it ^^.

Well, I've seen most of the ones freedom88 has listed on his post there.

Grave of the Fireflies - we own and it breaks my heart whenever I see it.

FMA - I love

Sailor Moon - was great w/out all the editing done for USA tv

I like Elfen Lied although it's very graphic.

Vampire Hunter D or something like that. Very good.

Spirited Away

And thanks to Fadem I have a cool a** link.

Geez! What is the deal w/ Anime?
*Anamcara waits for the expected smack on the head.
I've only seen some of what they have on Starz (Well you know, some of the vampire ones anyway. I mean it's vampires! Of course I'm gonna watch it, if there isn't anything else on)
And I saw Spirited Away and various other kid's cartoons more time than I like to remember. My kids love it. So why is it that everybody is so up on this stuff. What am I missing?

#22:  Author: Iluminada PostPosted: Mon 29 Aug, 2005
    ----
*Iluminada smacks Anamcara.

Gosh that felt good. Then you haven't watched the right Anime. Most of what you see on tv isn't really technically good.

They're worth watching. Except if you just think of them as cartoons then you'll never get it.

#23:  Author: Anamcara PostPosted: Mon 29 Aug, 2005
    ----
"Hey!"
*Anamcara thinks maybe Iluminada put a little extra smack in there.

shutup I plead the 5th on that comment.

With anime, you have to think of what type of characters you like. What do you like in a movie or plot. B/c not all anime is compatible to what people like.

And with some of these people you really have to enjoy or not mind sci-fi.

#25:  Author: Anamcara PostPosted: Tue 30 Aug, 2005
    ----
Well I love scifi, and vampires and werewolves. Spirited Away was all right with the spirits. I just got sick of it after the 50th time. And most of what I've seen was for younger audiences, I guess.

#26:  Author: Iluminada PostPosted: Tue 30 Aug, 2005
    ----
Then you're missing some good anime. B/c the majority of these aren't made for kids.

*Iluminada makes a mental note to say she is not referencing Hentai.

Some of the anime I've seen are for adults. They haven't been edited. Are you good with gore?

#27:  Author: Anamcara PostPosted: Tue 30 Aug, 2005
    ----
No problem with gore at all really. My favorite part of nursing is wound care actually. grin

#28:  Author: Iluminada PostPosted: Tue 30 Aug, 2005

*Alvin makes mental note to try and watch Grave of the Fireflies.

Lemme see, I've watched quite a few anime (though not as much as Fadem) and they're mostly only series. I'm too lazy to try and remember all of the ones I've watched though. Here's a few though...

Dragonball (Z and GT included)
Yu-Yu Hakusho
One Piece (I really like this one.)
Yu-Gi Oh
Samurai X (I keep whistling the sad theme of this to myself for the past 2 years...)
Samurai Deeper Kyo
InuYasha (I've yet to see the whole series but its pretty good)
TriGun
Hajime no Ippo (Unbelievably great boxing anime.)

That's all for now.

Oh I watched Vampire Hunter D yesterday Iluminada... its pretty good, I like the newer version better than the old one though...

Grave of the Fireflies is good. It's a well put together Anime. It has a great realistic quality to it. The characters and the drawing is just great.

Yeah, it's sad b/c it depicts a time in our history. Something that truly happened. No one likes the holocaust but people still watch Schindler's List, Sophie's Choice, The Pianist, etc...

I liked Elfen Lied too but I'm having trouble getting a hold of the rest of the series. Some guy at the anime store told us that it's not out yet. Does anyone know for sure.

Oh, and Ninja Scroll is good too.

"The story is about Ichigo (lead character) becoming a substitute Death God trying to stop "Hollows" (evil spirts) from killing good spirits. As the story unfolds conspiracies starts to take place creating the twists of the story."

Bleach Rules. Its about a kid who becomes a deathgod and fights evil spirits. Its really good.

Trigun is awesome too.

Naruto is too cool. I love ninjas.

But, the one and only ALL TIME GREATEST ANIME OF ALL TIME EVER IN THE HISTORY OF HISTORY IS....

GOLDENBOY

The greatest ninja of all time is....

ROCK LEE

I've seen alot of animes in my day. Its good times.

First off, I watched Pokemon when I was really young. I also moved over to some of it's rip offs (such as Digimon).

After I got sick of Pokemon and it's clones, i moved onto watching Dragon Ball Z (but I got bored of it... I think getting bored of that show is inevitable really).

Then it was Gundam Wing next (which I enjoyed quite a bit... never did find out how ended though).

After that... Tenchi. Which I quickly got weary of. The first episode of each series was cool. But after that it just turned into the girls fighting over who Tenchi.
You can only watch so many episodes before screaming, 'Tenchi! Be a man already!'

Then (years later) I found Outlaw Star. Which was really cool (honestly, any show where the hero is an arrogant womaniser is cool wink5). But there's not many episodes of it sadblauw.

And... that's it .

Ruroni Kenshin OVAs were awesome, the actual series sucked complete *** though. Watching bleach at the moment, trying to avoid reading the manga of it. Also started watching Excel Saga, so crazy and random yet funny, reminds me of disconnected lucid dreams

I don't really know

Samurai Champloo, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and GT, Ghost in the Shell, Full Metal Alchemist, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Rurouni Kenshin, Inuyasha, Lupin the Third, One Piece, Yuyu Hakusho, Sailor Moon (don't ask rolleyes ), Wolf's Rain, IGPX, Zoids, Gundam Wing, Big O, Tekken, Viewtiful Joe, Escaflowne--man, pretty much anything anime (can The Boondocks be considered anime? The art is much like that of Yu Gi Oh! I guess not--it's got to be made in Japan).

I also like Bo-Bo-Bo Bo Bo Bo-Bo-Bo--it's just...WEIRD! To say the least...overspannen

My favorite all-time anime is Last Exile

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_Exile

There's your summary. The scenery is beautiful as the anime does well to incorporate sexy 3d graphics into the regular stuff.

The world the anime portrays is stunning. The 3d stuff helps it too. You'll be addicted to it after the first episode, heh, maybe the intro too.

Another decent series is Bleach. it has 73 episodes and counting. It's about death gods (shinigami) and nice sword fights where the swords have supernatural powers, this is all wrapped around a decent plot which I don't want to spoil.
The main character like in Naruto and Dragon Ball GT as usual has a good heart, but is not the brightest light on the string. Uzumaki Naruto...he's a good person, but he's a fool.

Anyway, Chrizimer Last Exile seems interesting.

W00t! I just discovered torrents for some old Sonic SatAM anime!

Wikipedia link here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_%28Sa tAM%29

I remember having seen it before the year 2000, it come on at about 7-8am every morning. At that time, I was into the sega console. I have several sonic games
Sonic 2
Sonic 3
Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic 3d Blast

but anyhow they took it off the air and I only had comics...
as it so happened, I thought of searching torrentspy and the old SatAM Sonic eps are out there. 2 seasons: 13 eps each.
a third season was canceled due to low ratings and power rangers were moving in and the tv station was changing leaderships. I got canned.

So what I'm saying is Sonic is my childhood hero.
Just search "Sonic SatAM" on torrentspy.com or isohunt.com
if you are interested. fun stuff ^_^

I forgot to add one of my more favored anime... its called Gensomaden Saiyuki. I really grew to like it. Its quite philosophical at times and it doesn't fail to make you think.

Most of all, I like its characters a lot. They're all very deep with well-thought out stories (and past lives too, actually...(they were gods before)) All of them are interesting. Take for example the character called Sanzo. He's a high ranking monk but he manages to seem so unholy especially with his comments like "Gods save no one now, only you can save yourself." And his most famous one... the Vanity of vanities: "Kill the Buddha as you meet him. Kill your father as you meet him. Never be captivated by anything or anyone. Live you life the way you feel."

(And the quotes you can get from that anime are endless.)

EDIT: (I just wanted to add something about my fave character there: Gojyo.)

As I said, charatcers there were developed well. I particularly like the story of Gojyo. He was born as the taboo child of a demon and a human. His step-mother (a demon) hated him blindly since she saw in his face the face of the woman that was loved by his father. His brother (also a full demon) though loved him. His tragedy was that his mother's rage once grew to such extreme that his brother had to kill her to save him. This was what he said about it:

"I think I carried a thing like a guilt towards my brother. The same brother who disappeared and the one who carried the sin of killing our mother in exchange for my life... That's why I've been thinking of whether or not I should apologize to him when I meet him or not... But I quit... The thing I want to show him isn't an apology nor gratitude... But to show him proudly that I'm living my life like this."-Sha Gojyo

That sounds like a pretty intresting anime Alvin, I think I will have to watch it somehow ... though catching anime in england is pretty much impossible... *sigh*

Those are some nice pics Iluminada ^^ ... can't say I recognise the artist, but there are some pretty awesome digital artists on deviantart with similar styles smile

Hmmm... I just started watching Inuyasha recently and got attached to it pretty quickly actually, there are some intresting characters mixed in with japanese lore. Not too give to much away, it focuses around a 1/2 demon inuyasha and Kagome whom is also the reincarnation of an ancient priestess named Kikyo, who guarded the sacred Shikon no Tama (Jewel of Four Souls), and who sealed away the half-demon Inuyasha who had tried to steal the jewel in order to become a full demon. Kikyo died of her wounds and had the jewel burned with her body... ^^ anyways Im off to revise ..sigh

I used to watch Inuaysha when they would show it on Adult swim it ,actually they still do, but theres just too many damn episode, lach1 like 165 or something. Anyway I'd say my favorite anime would have to be Berserk.

Gatts, an incredibly powerful warrior, is a lone swordsman in a medieval-fantasy world. He loses in a battle with a mysterious swordsman named Griffith, who holds a powerful pendant called the Eye of God. As the story progresses, secrets are revealed and the darkest depths of fantasy combat and political intrigue are explored.

This is definately a really good Action anime, medieval warfare style, with drama, horror, and even romance. So I sugest it.
Also, not sure if its an anime (I suppose its not but Im gonna reccomend it anyway), Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. If you havent seen it, then you might want to. Ive watched a few besides these, but they just didnt interest me too much.

Lain is probably my favorite among those, the ideas and themes in it are just so fascinating, and every time I watch it I understand more and more of its mysteries. Explaining ideas isnt the animes goal, it only asks questions.

Anime is awesome and all, but sometimes it can be damn frustrating--especially when they waste most of the show with monologuing and introspective moments and then towards the end, when the action finally seems to heat up--"To Be Continued..."--they leave you at a cliffhanger until they next day the show comes on (which for some, isn't until a week). My grams said it's to stretch it out--suspense...but damn, sometimes it can be ridiculous rolleyes

Other than that--I'm a huge fan! hurray

That reminds me of Dragon Ball Z (I hate Z! They destroyed everything that was good about Dragon Ball!), in which "there's only six minutes till the total damnation of the World and Goku has to defeat—say,—the Boku–Boku monster" and that fight lasts for 15 chapters of 20 minutes, and every now ans then the narrator reminds us that it's only a matter of minutes until doom. tounge2 It's so frustrating! lach2

My favorite anime this far is Elfen Lied. The story is interesting and deep. I loved it. The main characters have behind themselves significant and often tragical pasts, whith experiences that made them what they are. You understand even the most rabid killer, and may even get affectionate to them. Even if the slaughterers are not human, it makes you see how low humans fall.

But watch it only if seeing people get dismembered, decapitated or just plain torn apart, being used as toys in the process sometimes is ok with you. Really, when someone dies, you get to see all 5 the liters of blood they contained. There are some nude scenes, but they don't go far in that aspect. The story is very sad, and there are also scenes psychological torture.

Right on. I watched it, it's so lame on Toonami. They made it really cheesy, and made lots of mistakes. An example is how Iruka had a nosebleed that they cut out in the english dub of episode 1, but 5 seconds later he had tissue in his nose. I bet lots of people who haven't seen the Japanese version got what the heck he had in his nose and why. hand voor hoofd However, I just watch the Japanese version. I personally think that he should try that first.

There are no dubs here on TV, they just translate and redo the voice acting. But I guess is similar, if not identical to dubbing. Since I can't speak Japanese, I guess I'm stuck either with dubs or total translations.

Quote:
Tough on the outside, all heart on the inside, Onizuka turned to the life of a high school teacher for less excitement and action . . .or so he thought. GTO, A.K.A.: Great Teacher Onizuka, is the racy story of Onizuka, a former motorcycle gang member who becomes a teacher to make a difference and... to meet girls? Using his street smarts to deal with colleagues, students and troublemakers, Onizuka finds that he too has many lessons to learn!

...oh just finished the first ep of "Samurai Champloo" and I must say it's a pretty fresh anime makes me want to watch the rest instantly. If you like "Bleach" you'd like this...though the two are very different...

Hmm good question, not quite sure ... although I read somewhere there is a flow of souls between the worlds, so it is possible that they can be reborn in the human world

I think it may explain it in the quincy episode where Ishida and Ichigo are fighting each other eh

If you're still wondering, Bleach is spelled ブリーチ (Burīchi) in Japan, along with the romaji spelling. And there are two schools of thought on why it's called Bleach:

-When Japanese people bleach their hair, sometimes it doesn't work properly, and their hair ends up orange - in other words, yes, Ichigo's hair.
-Some think that Bleach may also refer to the fact that the shinigami's zanpakuto "cleanse a hollow's soul" just like bleach cleanses your white clothes.

Anyway, yes, there is, in fact, a constant flow of spirits between the two worlds, which is why the Quincies' bows are so damaging to the balance, since they completely destroy the souls. I would assume, though it is never really explained, that a soul who dies returns to the living world again. Seems like it'd be a bit of a one-sided process, though, seeing how long people seem to live in soul society.

Hi! Also an anime fan here (but I think even moreso a manga fan. ^_^) And uh, a fan of shounen-ai and yaoi. LOL wink5

My favorite *anime* series are Rurouni Kenshin, Fruits Basket, Yami no Matsuei, Hellsing, Azumanga Daioh and Fullmetal Alchemist.
I really want to watch Ghost in the Shell: 2nd Gig and Stand Alone Complex because I think I'll love them... but I haven't had the time yet!

My favorite manga ever is Battle Angel Alita. It is really violent at times, but also stunning, philosophical, and moving.... did you know there is a bit in volume 9 of the original manga series that is totally about lucid dreaming and false awakenings? \o/ And the new Last Order series is just amazing, too. I could rant about it forever :D

I also love the manga FAKE, Gerard & Jacques, Antique Bakery, Shout Out Loud!, Wild Rock... uh... those are all shounen-ai or yaoi titles. kiekeboe And I might have to start reading Yotsuba& because it's hilarious XD

I don't really like anime like Bleach - even though it has katana and samurai (yay!) I just can't get into it. confused Not my thing I guess. ^_^

Also watched DB but it just got worse with DB Z.

Other Animes I watched/ am watching:

-Angelic Layer
Yea bit of Pokemon style but I love the scenario. "It's an error that occured with the old prototypes: It's a bug". Yea as a fan of speedrunning I laughed so much at this point

-Elfenlied
One of my absolute favourites. The fansubbed version is better than the German dub, though.

-Love Hina
FUNNNEEEH

-Neon Genesis Evangelion
Just watched it some minutes ago. At first it's very intrigueing but after eps. 14 it's rather depressing. However, it's worth watching.

-The Vision of Escaflowne
Also one of my favourites. Though it sometimes seems that it's only made for girls in some scenes, I like the storyline and especially the ending of the series.

-Trinity Blood
First impression was quite bad, but the later eps. got much better than the first 2^^

Films so far are Pokemon 1-5 (1 was best, 3 was still ok but 4 and 5 are total crap, imo), Bokura no War game (digimon, Omnimon 4tw), Titan A.E., Final Fantasy: The Spirit within and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (last two are not real animes^^)

There're prolly some more but not worth mentioning.

My favorite manga ever is Battle Angel Alita. It is really violent at times, but also stunning, philosophical, and moving....

If you like really violent shounen anime, I would HIGHLY reccomend Blood+. It's a combination vampire-esque (sort of), sword-fighting, and mystery-type anime that just totally gets you hooked.

The main character, Saya, seems to be an ordinary schoolgirl, albeit with a few quirks. She has the appetite of an elephant, needs regular blood transfusions for unknown reasons, and knows nothing about her past before one year ago. One day, she is suddenly attacked by a vampire-like creature known as a Chiropteran. Some stranger with a monstrous-looking hand forces her to drink his blood and hands her a sword...

5/5 Stars

It's not available in English yet. I wouldn't call this unfortunate, though, since the English dubs invariably suck. You can find it online to download (perfectly legal unless you live in Japan) with English subtitles at www.realitylapse.com, along with many other series that may or may not be legal. (If it's licensed in your country, it's technically not legal. Otherwise, perfectly so.) You can also download it in High Quality AVI format via bittorrent.

I've given up on anime's a long time ago, 99% of them is of poor animating quality anyway and with constantly reused drawings.
I used to follow Naruto, but once I'd watched all the episodes I went on reading the manga and forgetting the tv episodes, as of a half year ago I stopped Naruto altogether, bores the hell outta me.

If Berserk or Cowboy Bebop would still be made I'd watch those though, god I love those series.

I am quite fanatic when it comes to manga's though, amongst my favorites:

Berserk, Leviathan, MPD-Psycho, Uzumaki (compl) (NOT naruto related!), Gantz, Battle Royal (compl), Biomega, Dorohedoro, Freesia, Jiraishin (compl), Skyhigh (-Karma), Abara and Zetman.

Most of these are considerably graphic (in the violent direction) but it's really a form of surrealism that I find most interesting, apart from Gantz these manga's have good stories and even though they're really graphic this is all in fitting and well thought-through situations.

Most of what I just named is freely and legally downloadable in a translated version from:

An update on my situation:

- Bleach: till episode 6x, don't remember well. The fights are fun to watch.
- Elfen Lied: completed. Loved the story and the characters.
- Naruto: lost interest because it's cheesy as hell to me.
- Hellsing: almost no storyline, but again, the fights were fun.
- Samurai Champloo: just began to watch. Cool fights.
- Evangelion: forgot which episode I had to watch.
- Full Metal Alchemist: just began to watch.
- Berserk: depressing, but interesting.
- Vampire Hunter D: not much storyline. Fun to watch anyway.
- .hack//sign: completed. Loved it totally. The intriguing storyline kept me hooked for all the 26 and something episodes. There has not been an uninteresting episode. Loved the characters too. One thing: imo it ended too abruptly. They should have provided more explanations. It was like:

Looked it up on Wikipedia anyway.

For those who care, Bleach has just left it's filler saga. Starting at episode 110, they're back in the manga arcs.

Naruto will be (FINALLY!) leaving it's STUPID, STUPID filler arcs on February 15, coming back as Naruto Shippuden (Hurricane Chronicles) and continuing from where it left off at episode 135. Three years later, and Naruto et all are older and much stronger. From someone who's been keeping up with the manga even though the fillers left me wanting more, and ultimately made me quit on the anime, it's going to be very much worth watching.

The fillers weren't that bad. I very much enjoyed watching all of the mini-adventures, and the some of the episodes were extremely funny. But I am looking forward to Naruto Shippuden.

Right down to it, whether you liked the filler arcs or not all depends on your taste in anime. Oh, and before I leave..

You're not alone! boogie

The Paprika thread also made me want to rewatch it (it's been a while), but the latest my favorite latest anime I've been watching is Denno Coil. Some people have actually compared it to Ghibli material (interesting, no?) with Ghost in the Shell. That's a pretty simplistic way of putting it, but...

Here's an AMV to perk your interest (with major spoilers) :D

I finished watching Denno Coil some months ago.
If I remember right; lots of Ghibli people where working on it, but did not realize it trough Studio Ghibli becouse they have something against television-series.

My current favorite anime series have to be Rozen Maiden, and my favorite director is probably Satoshi Kon (though I weren't that happy abut Paprika).

Nah, I'm a Miyazaki addict to be perfectly honest, as I said before I think you always have a 'special connection' with the first one/s you watch because they inspire you...as such

My favs:

Blood+
Full Metal Panic? FUMOFFU
Hellsing
Full Metal Alchemist

Okay, Blood+ was an awesome facelift for stories involving vampires. I found myself hating Saya towards the end though, with her bigotted belief that all vampires had to be killed. I even wound up feeling sorry for Diva at the end. All she wanted was her vampiric kins' right to exist, even if she was a total sadistic psycho-***. The whole plot had a very human bias that I didn't like at all. Still a very good series. Loved it.

FUMOFFU was excellent! I totally loved the idea of a mercenary highschool student with no understanding of civilian life, using military hardware on bullies, thugs, & even teachers. Absolutely hilarious. You usually don't get humor this good from an anime. It's almost American-style laughs!

Hellsing is awesome. The tv series has a cool, jazzy soundtrack, & the OVA's have good music and breathtaking animation. I thought the animation for the tv series sucked, although Alucard had a much more likeable personality there. The OVA's just made him into a total jerk.

Only saw a couple epis of FMA. Cool idea that alchemy. Funny jokes too.

Death Note's a great suspense, detective, strategy uh... thingy. L = instant classic. His style should be the new precendent for all future detective characters.

Oh, and one last thing... The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi sucked! I hated it. Just a bunch of good-natured kids entertaining some selfish little ***. Their "investigations" consisted of them doing stuff that had nothing to do with the plot, and throwing whatever loose ends they were left with off to Haruhi's reality altering abilities that she's not aware of. I thought it was just bad.
