Tooltips
PostPosted: Thu 30 Nov, 2006  Reply with quote

When I hover my mouse over an 'underlined' expression like LD, WILD, DJ etc., a handy little tooltip will appear. But mostly the text is cut off, so I can't read all of it.

How can I make the whole text appear?

Can you print a screenshot of your mouse hovering the text so we can see what you mean? If you don't know how to do this hit the "print screen" key on your keyboard and paste that (ctrl-v) in a paint program. Save it as a .gif or .jpg will do and upload it to www.imageshack.us (free image hosting)... post the link to that here, thanks.

i know what you mean, you most likely use firefox as a browser. It does that in firefox, in IE the text shows up properly.

The tooltip issue is a problem with firefox.

I have no idea whether there is a fix for it, but it's been like that since the beginning. It works fine in IE and Opera.

Not, that's because the title attribute is not supposed to be functional in screen, but rather a tool for making a page more accessible. Thus, long title attributes are cut in Firefox as a way to discourage this kind of use of them, since a blind person would most likely find themselves having to hear the long version rather than the highlighted word every time it shows up.

The only way of making tooltips functional for FireFox is hardcoding them, for instance, by making an accronym:after pseudoelement whose content is set to the accronym's title attribute. That would work in Opera and Firefox, but not IE.

You can always do that by means of DOM+Javascript too, but that's really a lot of work.

It seems to be FF indeed, I tried viewing them in IE and they displayed correctly.

I guess I'll just have to use IE to know what the whole tooltip says (which is easy considering I have an extension called 'IE Tab' installed which makes the page you're viewing open in a new FF tab using IE to load it, by just a single click grin.

Functionality + reasons not to use IE in any form = Better than accessibility.

Besides last time I checked, I wasn't blind.

I've installed the extension and it works greatly. Beats using IE. Thanks for pointing to it smile

I would recomment overlibb, the free javascript popup-script used in loads of sites for tooltips. works in all browsers. There should be a plugin for PHPBB for that. Or else it should not be too hard to integrate this in the forums code.
