disadvantages of lucid dreaming?

Lets see:

  • You may forget which ‘side’ is which and eventually go through what is commonly known as the Lucid Dreamer Paradigm Shift where your normal waking consciousness resides in the dreamstate while you think that reality is the dream. In reality the subject is in a deep coma. The only way to cure it is for the person to become lucid once again and pull another PS - usually through the help of a Dream-Walker. It has been reported a few times that, during the coma or afterwards, the subject will experience heightened abilities in psychokinesis, telepathy, clairvoyance, aura-sense, and general cognition/awareness - possessing abilities much like they did in their lucid dreams.

  • You may end up sleepwalking your LD in which you decided to get hit by a semi.

  • You might IRL trick yourself into being lucid and jump out a window.

  • Did i mention the COMA?!

HEHEHE yeah all that im just joking about. However on a serious note one might become addicted to the exciting aspects of LD’s, and then see waking life as less able to deliver exciting feelings than LD’s and sooo.

Or, there is the possibility one might substitute things in LD’s for Waking life things. However, this i guess would be healthy in moderation (like skydiving w/out parachute in LD’s is safer than IRL). But unhealthy if used for something like a substitute for social contact.

Ive never heard of any of this happening though, so you probably shouldnt worry about it, probably just my imagination.

Personally, i think that LD’s are quite safe. Nothing definetely bad has happened to me…yet. (hehe im just joking, no offense or anything)

I think we need to be clear on this one. There is no evidence that suggests lucid dreaming can cause depression. Some people have some theories about this but that is all they are.

To answer your question, if there is a down side to lucid dreaming I have yet to find it.

i’d like to point out that this is a general discussion forum, this topic is more suited to “the quest for lucidity” or “lucidity intro” or “beyond dreaming”

if you’ll take a look in the forum index it says

“Lucid Lounge
When you feel like talking about something else besides dreaming come in, relax, have a drink and share your story.”

one disadvantage to LD is the dreams no longer seem “real” so if you have like, sex for example it’s like you know it’s fictional, but in a normal dream you might think it’s “real” per se.

Yeah, sorry. Sometimes when accompanied by my odd sense of humor, my seriousness gets a little vague. The sad scenarios i mentioned, i must repeat that ive never actually seen them happen, they are at this point naught but possibility, empty, given the lack of scientific proof.

Yeah, if only one could ‘dive under’ and know he/she wont permanently lose lucidity. Its the green grass and the fence thing, hehe.

Actually. I was referring to Dream_Reacher post:

Sentient

I thought you were kidding.

Cool avatar BTW.

yeah srry, i kinda think it’s BS, i was just posting the link cuz i saw it on the forums earlier, that’s wher the “some ppl” and “possibly” part comes in

o wait i never said “some people”, ow well thats whut i meant haha :content:

As someone who is a depressive i find lucid dreaming makes me happier.

Maybe the depressive feeling comes from knowing you’ve woken up as opposed to being true depression.

As it is actually your subconcious that makes you lucid (after all, the RC’s only work becuase our subconcious lets them - if it wanted [as it does sometimes] it stops them from working) and your sub-c would never do anything that could harm you (try holding your breath untill you die - you can’t).

But then again, if lucid dreaming really can hurt you, it would explain why your sub-c sometimes causes you to wake up, have a FA or lose lucidity during them. It’s basically saying, ‘you’ve had enough now, buddy.’

i agree…when i have lucid dreams, i wake up in the best mood that ive been in. i would think that a very small amount of depression might strike upon you if you start to cry that you cant be in a lucid dream all the time or something…or…possibly you could get depression from wanting a lucid dream so much, but not achieving one. but…i know if i had lucid dreams every night, i would be the happiest man alive. :cool_laugh:

you think that now but you really get used to them and they often times aren’t special, I have maybe 5 “memorable” LDs per month, the rest are just chaotic meanlingless memories that often times fade away, like you know, just sex and flying… but not good sex or flying.

What exactly is a Dream Walker? Is that just someone who is very adept at Lucid and Shared Dreaming?

i dont think they would get old…they are like regular dreams…except more to do. instead of watching a film…you are the one making the film. and i personally like making it. and…how can they not be special?! you make them the way you want them. if you dont like the setting…u spin…theres so much things to do.

i agree, i could see how the novelty may where off a bit, but i still think it would be way kool. even stephen laberge said that he still enjoys the thrill from his LD’s.

I guess if you got really into LD’s you might end up sleeping too much

I’ve been getting that a bit with mine recently and there’s still loads I haven’t tried yet. With me it’s down to lazziness though. I really need to plan them more.

yeah…that is one thing im worried about. whenver i have a lucid dream [rare]…i do the spinning method tons of times…and ill go to bed like at 11 and wake up like at 1 pm. but…i do have to say…staying lucid in a dream for a while can be pretty fun

Too lazy to read the other posts so sorry if this has already been posted. lol

I don’t know if this is true, but if you go so far into the subconcious mind in an LD you may fall into a coma. But theres like, a 0.5 chance of that happening.

so wouldnt that mean 50% chance?

That is just a myth as far as I know. Absolutely no evidence to support it.

Never heard it!
