For me it has mostly to do with exploration - of life, truth, and whatnot. I enjoy the idea that it's a completely new, relatively unresearched "reality" and we can design our own experiment ...

Yes, for me there is a big difference when I go back to sleep immediately (usually no results) and after waiting an hour or so, so that I would properly wake up but would still fall asleep rather easi ...

I think Robert Waggoner said that majority of "natural" lucid dreamers he met learned the skill as children due to reoccurring nightmares. I'm noticing the trend as well.
