Chico Science & Nação Zumbi
Translation notes: I tried to keep to the rhythm as much as I could, so you can arguably sing to most of these lyrics. In the middle there’s a largely untranslated portion which consists of typically Brazilian words and names chosen pretty much at random for their Brazilianness — it wouldn’t make sense to translate those. Near the end, there’s a clever bunch of verses where the author takes the word “molambo” (a poor or humble or generally meek person, elsewhere translated as “humbleman”) back to its original meaning (a worn out or ragged piece of cloth).
Why is there on the river, a mud-eating duck? (×3) ┏
┃ Rivers, bridges and overdrives — so breathtaking, these constructions made of mud!
┃ Mangrove, mangrove, mangrove, mangrove, mangrove, mangrove, mangrove.
┗
repeat [ And the mud, it eats the hogan, in the hogan there’s a humbleman
The humbleman has flown, fell right there over the pavement under heavy midday sun
Car ran over and the humbleman was lying over there
Humbleman me, humbleman you, humbleman me, humbleman you repeat [ ×2 It’s macaxeira, Imbiribeira, Bom Pastor, it’s the Ibura, Ipseb, Torreão, Casa Amarela…
Boa Viagem, Genipapo, Bonifácio, Santo Amaro, Madalena, Boa Vista, Dois Irmãos…
It’s Cais do porto, it’s Caxangá, it’s Brasilit, Beberibe, CDU, Capibaribe, it’s the Centrão…
And I say, repeat [ ×2 And the mud, it eats the hogan, in the hogan there’s a humbleman
The humbleman has flown, fell right there over the pavement under heavy midday sun
Car ran over and the humbleman was lying over there
Humbleman me, humbleman you, humbleman me, humbleman you repeat [ ×2 Humbleman me, humbleman you, humbleman me, humbleman you
Humbleman such a good cloth to knit lies with
Humbleman such a good cloth to knit misery
Humbleman such a good cloth to knit lies with, lies with, lies with
Humbleman such a good cloth to knit misery, misery, misery
